The Husker football season may not be going the way fans had hoped, but that probably won’t stop them from pouring into Lincoln each game day.

While they’re in town, they’re going to need somewhere to eat and, just as importantly, drink.

Gate 25 has fans covered. The bar and restaurant in Lincoln’s Railyard entertainment district is less than a mile from Memorial Stadium.

It has all the standard game-day eats — sandwiches, burgers, salads and pizzas, most of them with a sophisticated twist.

There’s a lamb burger on the menu and, tucked among the usual appetizers of nachos and wings, are calamari and crab cakes.

The prices are relatively low. Most of Gate 25’s food costs less than $15.

I tried the Gates Nachos for $12. They come topped with cheddar, jack and bleu cheeses; poblano-braised chicken; caramelized onions; peppadews; peppercorn sauce and scallions. Personally, I could have done without the bleu cheese, but otherwise, they were really good, as most nachos are.

On the drinks side, I tried one of Gate 25’s mules. They have 15 mules, each priced at $6 or $7. They have the traditional with ginger beer, vodka and lime, as well as Irish mules (with Jameson Irish whiskey), Kentucky mules (with bourbon) and Canadian mules (with Canadian whiskey).

I had the Tropical Mule, which comes with Malibu Coconut Rum and peach schnapps. It was good — sweet, but not overly so. It had the right blend of tropical flavors, and cost $6.

Gate 25 also has a selection of about a dozen cocktails, each priced at $6. They include the usuals like the Old Fashioned, Manhattan and Cosmopolitan.

There also are some specialty cocktails, like a Chocolate Martini (with Kahlua, Irish cream, vanilla vodka, chocolate syrup and whipped cream) and the Mermaid Water cocktail (with spiced rum, Malibu Coconut Rum, Blue Curacao, pineapple juice and orange).

Gate 25 also has approximately a dozen wines, most priced at less than $10 by the glass or about $30 by the bottle.

Gate 25 really delivers with its beer selection. It offers more than three dozen beers, with options on tap or by bottle or can. This includes the usual domestic and import options, as well as a decent selection of Nebraska brews.

They have beers from Nebraska Brewing Company, Brickway and Zipline. Of these, I recommend Nebraska Brewing Company’s EOS Hefeweizen and Zipline’s Copper Alt.

Gate 25 has generous daily specials like mules for $4 on Moscow Mondays; deals on margaritas, tequila shots and Mexican bottled beers on Street Taco Tuesdays; and beer specials on Burger Madness Wednesdays. These deals last from 4 p.m. until the kitchen closes at 10 p.m.

Gate 25 is a comfortable place to hang out for a while and enjoy the specials. It has lots of seating, all with a good view of their televisions. It also has patio seating out front and access to the shared Railyard seating area out back.

Check out the outdoor seating while you can and grab a Moscow mule. It’s a good way to add a bit of joy to your game day.
