In recent years, lots of craft breweries have opened in Lincoln — and not all of them have survived. Ploughshare Brewing Company, for one, closed in 2017.
That left the brewery’s prime location at 1630 P St. — just off the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus — vacant. Enter Green Flash, a San Diego-based brewery that opened Green Flash Brewhouse & Eatery in the location in summer 2018.
Stripped of its rustic, farmhouse décor that was a staple of Ploughshare, the location loses a bit of its charm. But it’s still a spacious and comfortable place to drink. Plus, now there are televisions so you can catch the game.
I visited during a Husker basketball game, and Green Flash was catering to the hometown crowd with Husker happy hour deals. When Husker football, basketball or volleyball games are on television, Green Flash offers $2 off pints and 25 percent off appetizers.
This is the type of deal you’d expect at a sports bar, but this is no sports bar. Green Flash’s food and drinks are better than that. True to its name, Green Flash Brewhouse & Eatery delivers quality in both its brews and its eats.
The night I visited, Green Flash had about a dozen beers on tap. Though almost a third were IPAs, there was still a decent variety of offerings — including some lagers, a stout, a porter, some Belgian beers, a blonde ale and an Irish red.
I tried the GFB Blonde Ale; Hazy Day, a hazy Belgian single; Sailing Stone, a dry stout; and the Alpine Irish Red. All of them were smooth, solid brews I’d be happy to have again, but the easy-drinking GFB Blonde Ale was my favorite.
Green Flash serves its beers in full-pour, half-pour and taster sizes for $6, $3 and $1.50, respectively. It also has a generous selection of beer-to-go options, including the usual growlers, as well as 750-milliliter bottles and six packs of bottles and cans. The beer-to-go offerings include several draught beers and some beers that aren’t on tap, like those from Green Flash’s more-upscale Cellar 3 collection.
Speaking of upscale, Green Flash’s food is not your typical sports-bar fare. Green Flash gets its ingredients from regional farms and makes all of its menu items in-house. This makes for better food than what you’ll find at many bar and grills. It also makes for different menu offerings.
Green Flash has some traditional brewpub offerings like wings, of course. But, in general, the eatery specializes in slightly more sophisticated eats, with more fresh vegetables and fewer fried foods.
Despite its more sophisticated offerings, though, Green Flash’s menu is still relatively inexpensive. The most expensive item on the menu is the pork chop entrée for $18, and most of the other menu items — starters, snacks, sandwiches, soups and salads — are under $15.
I had the house burger with Gouda, caramelized onion jam, aioli and arugula on a brioche bun for $12. It was delicious and came in very generous portions, as did my drinking buddy’s Southern fried chicken sandwich, which came with pimiento cheese, aioli and bread and butter pickles on a brioche bun for $13. The food was as good as the beer, if not better.
Green Flash is a worthy brewhouse and eatery, and a welcome addition to Lincoln’s growing craft beer scene. Visit, so it sticks around.
